Sony announced a successor to the PlayStation 4 today, but it's not intended to replace the console launched back in 2013. Instead, the PlayStation 4 Pro is an upgraded tier of console that is designed to play the same games as the existing PS4 at a higher fidelity—meaning, with 4K resolutions and HDR (high dynamic range).

Confirming rumors first reported back in March, the Pro sports an improved CPU, GPU, and faster memory than its predecessors. Sony's Mark Cerny confirmed a 1TB hard drive shipping in all PS4 Pro consoles.

“For the highly discriminating gamer, there is room for advancement, and they want it in this generation,” Sony's Andrew House told the New York City event crowd. “We’re excited about 4K and high dynamic range.”

Back at E3, Microsoft announced its own mid-generation hardware upgrade, codenamed Scorpio, is set to launch near the end of 2017.

This is a breaking report and is being updated as it develops.

The worst-kept secret in gaming is now official: at an event in New York today, Sony finally announced the much leaked slimmer version of the PlayStation 4. It will cost $299 and be available on September 15th "in most markets."

The new console is functionally nearly identical to the original PS4, but with a new streamlined design that makes it noticeably smaller. The slim PS4 also comes with a slightly updated version of the DualShock 4 controller with a redesigned light bar that’s now visible from the front.

The existence of a smaller and slimmer PS4 has been known for some time, though Sony had yet to officially confirm it was real until today. The console first popped up on auction site Gumtree, and eventually sites like Eurogamer managed to check it out in person. Someone even reviewed the slim PS4 before it was officially announced.

The redesigned version of Sony’s console comes nearly three years after the PS4 first launched, and follows the recent announcement and launch of the Xbox One S, a sleeker version of Microsoft’s flagship game console.

Sony picked a really bad date to announce all this tbh :lana:

Iwontell

Fvck both Sony and Microsoft in the 4ss with something large, hard and sandpapery for making me buy new consoles less than 4 years after buying their alleged "new gen" machines (which, by the way, only recently started delivering decent games)...

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

They weren't "Next-Gen" to begin with. For that, they would've supported games in 4K and all that from the start.

But instead of going the Xbox360 / PS3 way and deliver a really powerful console which results in a financial loss for them in the beginning, they made it easy for them and just used some mid-range PC parts and sold them for profit.

It's kinda a scam tbh. :lana:

They could've easily fit a dedicated graphics chip into the cases of the XOne or PS4 for example.

I literally just got a ps4, the graphics are already good enough. My gaming experience will not somehow drastically change because of a graphics update that most people won't notice with the naked eye. My coins, instead, are reserved for the NX

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

Wait, Playstations still exist?

I have the PS4 and I'm still playing with my PS3... :laughga:

We don’t really need to talk too much, show each other what we know 🦋
