Erotica debuted with 167,000 copies

Damn. They call ARTPOP a flop which opened with 270.000+ and you CAN'T compare today's music industry when there's internet and almost nobody even buys music when they can download it for free.

This thread is so transparent. Obviously trying to start something. But hey, do you sis.

Way to assume the worst in me. I appreciate it.

OMG WHAT THE FUCK? The OT wasn't making any excuses! And excuses for what I might add. ARTPOP is f--king great, some of us love it and consider it her best and all you ever do is make threads which sprea negativity and you're full of s--t tbh! Just stop being so negative!!! Ugh God we all know you're some old ass Madonna stan and you love to bash Gag but it's getting old.

I don't see how it's comparable. Madonna was busy as **** and had many successful endeavors after Like A Prayer leading right up to Erotica. She was coming off her most successful era ever. The groundbreaking Like a Prayer album, Huge singles(4 number ones and 4 top tens); 2 hit films, probably one of the controversial and iconic tours ever and a highly successful greatest hits album. Then Erotica came out.

Gaga's timeline isn't similar at all. Born This Way started with a bang but seemed to lose momentum. Edge, You and I, Marry never really got that big. Her tour didn't come out till a year after and then lasted a year alongside a media black out. After the injury it was another 6 months of silence then Applause comes out, her first single in over a year in half. She was absent in the media for a long time. Then ARTPOP came out softly 3 months later. There is nothing really comparable to any era. Gaga's career is Gaga's career. Her "Hit" era imo was Fame/Fame Monster.

No flamebait. That's exactly what I want to avoid. I started this thread because I see these similarities and I want other like-minded people to help expand upon that.

Furthermore, I love both of them equally. Gaga, Madonna, and Bey form my holy trinity, in case anyone was doubting my love.

I get what you're saying and I didn't think what you wrote sounded pro-Madonna/anti-Gaga (or vice versa) at all.

The two albums are very different creatively but in terms of how they fit into each artist's career trajectory is fascinating.

Im blonde, I'm skinny, I'm rich, and I'm a little bit of a bitch.

grrrr why is it always about numbers with you people. If you want to compare albums, do it on a qualitative basis  :grr:

I'm just being realistic, do you honestly see ARTPOP getting plaudits years later? i can see that happening to BTW but not ARTPOP. Just wait for her next album, fans will stop lying to themselves eventually.

TFM and BTW are her best work but no point in arguing since that is a whole different topic all together.

agreed

I can see some similarities, except Madonna brought a complete new sound with Erotica while exploring with totally innovative lyrics... on the other hand ARTPOP is only a reloaded version of Gaga's earliest works (aka The Fame)

I really don't know if I agree or not. Sure there are commercial similarities somewhat, but that's where it ends. Erotica was an album that brought together the marriage of extreme art and music together. I think Gaga is more about art for this album.

Yeah I definitely see your argument. It was a cycle for both artists where many fans were happy but the public backed away a little. Controversy always does that though. Madonna bounced back in a huge way though, especially with Ray Of Light which is highly regarded to be the best record of her career, and I'm sure Gaga will do the same. Gaga is not over, and her best work is yet to be released.

This.

I also agree with Cersei that it's not so much the style/content of the albums, but how the eras fit in the trajectory of their careers.

It's almost necessary that artists go through periods of waning success to prove their mettle. Granted, even if Gaga stopped right now, she'd have a back-catalogue and list of achievements than many would die for.
